چکیده
Title: Meniere’s disease with patulous eustachian tubes Background: Meniere’s disease (MD) is considered to be a multifactorial disease. Although there are some previous reports on the relationship between MD and stenotic eustachian tube (ET), there are a few reports evaluating MD and patulous ET. The study aimed to investigate whether MD would have patulous ET or not. Methods and Findings: Sonotubometry was performed in patients with MD and healthy controls and the results and their correlations with hearing levels were assessed. 23 of 45 (51.1%) subjects in the MD group were diagnosed with eustachian tube dysfunction. 12 ears (26.7%) were diagnosed with “a stenotic tube type” and 11 ears (24.4%) were diagnosed with “a patulous tube type”. There was a significant difference between the MD group and healthy volunteer group in the variance of duration. The ratio of MD patients in the subjects showing patulous ET type (duration more than 899.2 ms) was significant higher than healthy controls. The mean amplitude and duration of the MD group were significantly higher than that of healthy controls. There was no significant relationship between ET function and hearing levels and vertigo attacks. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that the patients with MD have not only a stenotic ET but also a patulous ET.

Amantadine-Induced Patulous Eustachian Tubes in Parkinson's Disease
Patulous Eustachian tube (PET) is a common condition that produces symptoms of aural fullness and autophony. We describe a Parkinson's disease (PD) patient that experienced a reversible bilateral patulous (hyperpatent) Eustachian tube syndrome induced by treatment with amantadine hydrochloride. The clinical features, relevant anatomy and physiology, and associated risk factors for PET are revie...
متن کاملEustachian tube function in patients with eosinophilic otitis media associated with bronchial asthma evaluated by sonotubometry.
OBJECTIVE To determine eustachian tube function in patients with asthma and with or without eosinophilic otitis media (EOM), a new middle ear disease entity with a highly viscous middle ear effusion containing many eosinophils and usually associated with bronchial asthma. One of the most important causes of otitis media (OM) is eustachian tube dysfunction. DESIGN Retrospective case review. ...
متن کاملUpdate on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube.
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The purpose of this review is to summarize the recent knowledge on eustachian tube dysfunction and the patulous eustachian tube. RECENT FINDINGS A clinically useful test for eustachian tube function is still lacking. Narrowing of the isthmus alone was demonstrated to be an insufficient cause of otitis media. Inflammatory mediators identified within the eustachian tube and mi...
متن کاملTubal compliance--changes with age and in tubal malfunction.
OBJECTIVE It is known that eustachian tubal compliance has influence on the tubal function. We applied the direct measurement method to ascertain whether or not aging and tubal diseases are related to the compliance of the cartilaginous part of the eustachian tube. METHODS We developed a method for directly measuring tubal compliance by inserting a balloon catheter, which is inflated with wat...
متن کاملPREVALENCE OF TRAUMATIC TYMPANIC MEMBRANE PERFORATION IN PATIENTS WITH A PATULOUS EUSTACHIAN TUBE
Background: With respect to physical relations in force and pressure, we hypothesized that the prevalence of traumatic tympanic membrane perforation in patients with a patulous Eustachian tube is greater than normal, because in Eustachian tube patency, the internal air pressure of the middle ear will not increase after compression, subsequent to trauma. Therefore the force upon the tympanic...
